How new technology and strategies for design can make possible dynamic, evolving places that respond to the complexities of life.

Changing Places has a broad, multi-disciplinary research agenda. We are partnering with industry to test an open-source model for design and assembly that could lead to scalable, mass-customized, high-performance, zero-energy homes. We are prototyping proactive health and energy conservation systems that we test in the context of everyday life. We are developing algorithms, and sensing and visualization tools, to study how design and technology can better respond to the changing nature of work.

What We're Looking For

Students who enjoy exploring the intersection of design (from buildings to interfaces), technology (from wireless communication to programming), and people (from psychology to activity recognition).

Our Work at a Glance

The PlaceLab is one of the most highly instrumented environments ever built. In this living laboratory, we are evaluating the interaction of volunteer participants with new systems developed by our students. We are also developing portable, furniture-based sensing systems to study human behavior in existing homes and workplaces.

Special Requirements
A portfolio of work is required with your application.
