My grandfather taught me: If mama ain’t happy, ain’t nobody happy. At the Lab...As a member of the Tangible Media group, Hayes created interactive toys, systems, and devices that engage people’s touch to improve communication, education, and artistic expression. Projects at the Lab included Jabberstamp, Sound of Touch, and Topobo 3-D. Hayes received a BA in fine arts (sculpture) from Yale, helped design and develop the award-winning ZOOB building system, and ran his own art and design studio in California. He has earned several internationally recognized design awards and shown his art in Europe and the United States. After the Lab...Hayes is now a research scientist at the Nokia Research Center in Palo Alto, where he is a member of their user interface group—called the IDEA group. At Nokia, Hayes will pursue his goal of reinventing communications technologies for young children in a way that supports their creativity, collaboration, and developing interests. Kids have so many long-distance family members, but even common technologies like telephones don't neccessarily work well for them. Hayes wants to come up with better alternatives to help connect young children with their grandparents, parents, and friends. |
